Can ChatGPT or Claude read our WhatsApp groups and write the weekly report?
Yes. Spun MCP lets you connect ChatGPT, Claude or another AI assistant to your WhatsApp, so the assistant you already use can list your groups, read their messages, look up staff activity and write the weekly report for you. It is for travel agencies and tour operators who already work in an AI assistant and run their business in WhatsApp groups. Spun runs on a flat monthly plan with team members free and a free trial, on your normal WhatsApp number with no Business API. Reading is the default. Anything the assistant wants to send waits for a person to approve it.
Who this is for: an agency owner or operations manager who wants to ask their own AI assistant "what happened in the supplier groups this week?" and get an answer from the real messages.
Before you start
- A Spun organisation with your WhatsApp number connected.
- An organisation manager to approve the connection.
- An AI assistant that supports MCP connectors, such as ChatGPT or Claude.
Step 1: Add Spun to your AI assistant
- In your AI assistant, add a new MCP connector and paste this address:
https://api.spun.com/api/mcp. It is the same address for every organisation in every region. - Sign in with your Spun account when the assistant asks.
- On the consent page, pick the organisation and an access level:
- Read-only analyst reads message text, contacts, tasks and signals. No changes, no sends.
- Assistant, no sends also manages tasks, labels, signals and chats, and drafts replies. It never sends.
- Assistant with sends can also propose and schedule messages, and every send follows your organisation's approval settings.
- Decide on the box Also photos and voice-note transcripts. It is ticked by default for the two Assistant levels and unticked for Read-only analyst. Whatever the assistant reads goes to that AI provider.
- Approve. The steps for each assistant are in Connect ChatGPT, Claude or another AI assistant to Spun.
Step 2: Ask for the report
Once connected, ask in your own words. For example:
- "List my WhatsApp groups with the most messages this week."
- "Summarise the hotel supplier groups: open questions, changed prices, cancellations."
- "Staff activity for the last 30 days: who answered requests in the groups, and how fast?"
For staff activity the assistant needs a connection that can read conversations, contacts and groups. It gets counts and response times only, never message text, for up to 92 days. Spun has to know who your staff are; see Get an activity report per employee.
Step 3: Decide how sending works
- Open Settings → AI Assistant (MCP).
- Under Send posture, choose Drafts only, Human approval (recommended) or Autonomous.
- With Human approval (recommended), every message an assistant wants to send waits in Spun Tools → Automate → AI Sends. Press Approve & send, edit it, or Reject it. The History tab shows what was handled and by whom.
- In the Connected AI apps list you can change an app's access level in place or disconnect it at any time.
What to expect
- Reads use your plan's included Connected AI reads and never use AI credit. The tool usage section of Settings → AI Assistant (MCP) shows how many you have used this period. Allowances differ by plan; see Pricing.
- In a group, the assistant sees who sent each message: the member's number and matching contact name, or "hidden" when WhatsApp hides the number.
- If your organisation's AI privacy level is set to full, member and staff numbers are withheld from the assistant too.
Limits
- Autonomous sending is per app and deliberate. It needs the Autonomous posture plus a switch on that app with a typed confirmation. Changing the app's access level or reconnecting it turns it off again. Photos and files sent by an assistant always wait for approval.
- Weave always asks. Messages Weave, Spun's own AI, wants to send wait in AI Sends whatever the posture.
- Your number's groups only. The assistant sees only groups your connected number is a member of.
- Media reads have a daily limit per connection, and scanned PDFs and video cannot be read.
- Your sending rules still apply. Quiet hours and your other sending rules are checked when each message goes out.
What Spun does not do
- It does not give your AI assistant access to anything outside your Spun organisation, such as your booking system or email.
- It does not let an assistant send without your approval unless a manager switches that on for that app.
- It does not use the WhatsApp Business API. The assistant works through your normal WhatsApp number, so normal WhatsApp limits apply.
