Contacts: Import & Export
Manage your WhatsApp contact database — import from CSV, export for backup, and use custom fields for segmentation.
Import contacts from CSV
CSV format
Your CSV file should have columns for:
| Column | Required | Format | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| phone | ✅ | International format | +972501234567 |
| name | Optional | Full name | John Doe |
| Optional | Email address | [email protected] | |
| labels | Optional | Comma-separated | VIP, Hebrew |
| notes | Optional | Free text | Met at conference |
| [custom field] | Optional | Any value | Premium tier |
Import steps
- Navigate to Sidebar → Contacts
- Click "Import" (upload icon)
- Select your CSV file
- Map columns: Match CSV columns to Spun fields
- Preview: Review the first 5 rows
- Import: Click "Start Import"
- Results: See success/error count
Import tips
- Phone format matters — use international format (+countrycode...). Spun will attempt to normalize, but explicit format is safest.
- Duplicates: If a phone number already exists, the import UPDATES the contact (doesn't create a duplicate).
- Labels: If you include a "labels" column, contacts will be auto-labeled on import.
- Batch size: Max 10,000 contacts per import.
Export contacts
- Navigate to Sidebar → Contacts
- Click "Export" (download icon)
- Choose format: CSV or vCard
- Select which fields to include
- Apply filters if you only want a subset
What gets exported
- Phone number, name, email
- Labels
- Custom fields
- Last message date
- Contact notes
What does NOT export
- Message history (use data export in Settings → Safety for that)
- Media files
Custom fields
Add any extra data to contacts:
- Contacts → click any contact → "Add Field"
- Or Settings → Contacts → Custom Fields → define globally
