Spun Box: install with a package

Scenario: You want your WhatsApp connection to run from a Spun Box, a small router at home, instead of a computer that has to stay on. You install Spun on the box by uploading one file in the router's own pages. Nothing is installed on your computer, and it works from a phone browser too.

This option is being rolled out. If you do not see Download router package on your Self Proxy card, it is not available on your account yet. For the computer version of Self Proxy, see Self Proxy.

Why a box at all, what it changes compared with a computer, and the other way to set one up (the Spun Router Setup program on a Windows or Mac computer, which explains any problem in one plain sentence) are on Spun Box. This page covers the package route only.

What you need

  • A GL.iNet Beryl AX router (model GL-MT3000), set up with its own admin password and connected to your internet.
  • An account manager's Spun login.
  • A phone or computer connected to the Beryl's Wi-Fi (the network whose name starts with GL-MT3000) or plugged into its LAN port.

Set it up

  1. Get the file from Spun. In Spun, go to Settings → WhatsApp → Health and find the Self Proxy card. Click Download router package. The file is named spun-proxy and ends in .ipk. It is made for your account, so there is no code to type. Always download a fresh one: an old file may have expired.

  2. Open the router's technical page. Stay connected to the Beryl's Wi-Fi. Open 192.168.8.1 in a browser and log in with the router's admin password. Open System, then Advanced Settings. A second, more technical page opens. Log in again with the same password.

  3. Upload the package. On the technical page open System, then Software. Click Upload Package, choose the spun-proxy file you downloaded, then click Install. A box with text scrolls past, that is normal. When the install worked, the last line starts with spun-proxy: OK.

  4. Go back to Spun. The Self Proxy card shows the box under your account as Connected once Spun has confirmed its first check-in and a proxy test, usually within a few minutes. You can close the router pages. If the box is not there after 5 minutes, see Installed but not connected.

Install failed

The install log ends in a line that starts with spun-proxy: FAILED, followed by a number and the reason. Find the number below, fix the cause, and upload a freshly downloaded package.

LineWhat it meansWhat to do
FAILED (1)This box belongs to another Spun account. Nothing was changed. If the box should move to your account, see Move a box from another account.
FAILED (2)The package is incomplete, usually an interrupted download.Download a fresh package and upload it again.
FAILED (3)The package is damaged.Download a fresh package and upload it again.
FAILED (4)This router cannot run the Spun agent.Self Proxy on a router needs an arm64 router such as the GL.iNet Beryl AX.
FAILED (5)The install did not finish. The line includes the reason, for example an expired download or no internet on the router. Your existing connection, if any, stays as it was.Check that the router has internet, then download a fresh package and upload it again.
FAILED (6)The Spun service could not be created or started.Restart the router and upload a fresh package again.

Other errors in the log usually mean the wrong file was chosen (pick the .ipk from Spun, not another download) or the router has no free space left.

Installed but not connected

The log ended in spun-proxy: OK, but Spun does not show the box as Connected after 5 minutes:

  • Check that the router itself has internet: on 192.168.8.1, the Internet section should show Connected.
  • Download a fresh package and upload it again. Uploading again repairs the install; it never creates a second connection.
  • If it still does not connect, contact support from Spun.

Move a box from another account

An ordinary package never takes over a box that is connected to another Spun account. To move a box to your account on purpose, use the move package:

  1. Sign in to the account that should own the box from now on.
  2. On the Self Proxy card, choose Move a box from another account. Spun explains what will happen and asks you to confirm.
  3. Confirm, and upload the downloaded Move package like the normal package.

The move connects the box to your account first and then cancels the old account's access to the box. If the move package has expired, the box stays with the old account and nothing changes. The old account sees the box as disconnected. Only move a box you own, or with the other account's agreement.

Removing it

Removing the package in the router's pages stops the proxy but does not remove your account from the box. To stop using the box for Spun, remove the box from your Self Proxy card in Spun, or reset the router with the pin hole. It is then a normal GL.iNet router again.

Later

  • The router updates its own software: allowed. If the box stops showing Connected afterwards, download a fresh package and upload it again.
  • A package you downloaded weeks ago: it may have expired. Always download a fresh one.
  • You pressed the pin-hole reset: download a fresh package and upload it again. Spun recognizes the box and puts it back under your account as the same box.
